It also can cause the lower lip to look droopy and the neck to seem fatty. Furthermore, studies have shown that people associate a weak chin with a perceived lower intelligence, especially in men.
Chin augmentation is a relatively simple procedure that can have a subtle yet major impact on one’s appearance. It takes about 1 hour and is performed under local anesthesia with intravenous sedation at our certified surgical center.
The patient is sent home shortly following the surgery with a small bandage and is seen the following day in clinic. A small amount of pain and bruising can occur. Occasionally, the chin area and the lower lip may feel numb after the procedure but this usually resolves within a few weeks.
Dr. Amanda Fanous performs chin augmentation surgery by making a very small incision in the natural crease below the chin. A custom-shaped chin implant is then inserted into a carefully created pocket. The implant is made of synthetic material to mimic the feel of a normal chin. The incision is then closed with small sutures.
In select patients, augmentation of the chin can be achieved with a simple injection (filler). Depending on the type of injection used, the result can last from 5 months to 1 year, at which point the injection would need to be repeated. Pain and bruising are usually minimal, similar to any other injection of the face.
