Blepharoplasty in Montreal

The eyes are the most beautiful of our sensory organs. In the same way that an attractive frame should highlight a painting, eyelids serve to contour and draw attention to our eyes.

Excess skin in the upper eyelid can give the impression that the person is older than their actual age. It makes it difficult for women to wear their eyeliner or eye shadow. Also, puffy eyelids with bags can make someone look tired or sad.

About blepharoplasty

Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) is a procedure that aims to improve the appearance of the eyelids by removing excess skin and fat. Dr. Amanda Fanous’ goal is to rejuvenate the eyelids to create a natural look and a more refreshed and happy appearance. The upper and lower eyelids can be addressed at the same time or separately, or in combination with other rejuvenating facial procedures such as facelift or forehead lift.

Upper Eyelids (Upper Blepharoplasty)

A small incision is made in the natural crease of the eyelid. Excess skin and fat are carefully removed. The incision is closed with thin sutures.

Occasionally, the real problem resides in low brows, giving the false impression of excess upper eyelid skin. In this case, a forehead lift (frontoplasty) may be indicated.

Lower Eyelids (Lower Blepharoplasty)

If the lower lid problem consists only of excess fat (under-eye bags), a small incision is made on the inside of the lower eyelid (transconjunctival incision) and the excess fat is carefully removed.

If, in addition to bags, there is also excess skin in the lower lid area, an incision is placed right under the lower lashes (subciliary incision) to remove both the excess skin and fat. In this case, the incision is closed with tiny sutures.

Non-Surgical Eyelid Options

Botulinum toxin injections (Botox) can lift the brow a little and stretch the excess skin of the upper eyelids. A filler injection treatment can also be used to improve the appearance of deep grooves or bags under the eyes (tear-trough area). Both botulinum toxin and tear-trough injections are not permanent and last anywhere from 3 to 6 months.

Also, “platelet rich plasma” (PRP) is a treatment using the patient’s own blood to stimulate collagen growth under the skin. It is given under the eye to improve fine lines, bluish discoloration and grooves.

The surgery

The surgery is done under local anesthesia alone or with sedation and takes approximately 1-2 hours.

The patient arrives the morning of the procedure and returns home the same day. There is usually a small amount of bruising and swelling. The patient is then seen for the first follow-up visit about one week after surgery.

The initial consultation, the surgery and the follow-up visits all take place at our certified surgical center.
